Researcher Pat

Ossett used to be a main centre for the manufacture of Mungo and shoddy, derivative cloth from recycled wool and cotton. I think it was used to make coarse cloths maybe like blankets and similar .In fact Mungo and Shoddy manufacture was one of the first large scale recycling operations and it is a shame the business is no longer operative. Its all been replaced with designer labels and throwaway tat.

As you enter Dewsbury on the train (from Leeds) there is still a massive building in the Old Mill style with "Shoddy & Mungo Manufrs" written across it in letters eight feet high. I always thought it was a (terrible) company name. But aparrently not.

cheers Pat.

There is still a factory that deals with Mungo and Shoddy in Ossett. I thought it was generally used for stuffing furniture and mattresses.
