A Conversation for Dragons

Where the dragons went

Theories:
1) Never existed;
2) Left to be guardians on some astral plane;
3) Dormant in natural fortifications, eg. bottoms of deep rivers, volcanoes, South Pole, etc.;
4) Still here, just hiding.

Other ideas?

That's a very interesting idea. Where did they go? To answer that you have to look at the different kinds.

Kimono: Still exist.
Fairy: Skewerd, cooked and eaten.
Western (euro/american): May or may not have existed.
Eastern: The only ones to still hold their heritage. As a consiquence, they are long forgotten and exist somewhere in the mists of the orient.

MAYBE THEY WENT HOME.
OR MAYBE PEOPLE DON'T THINK THEY EXIST SO THEIR BRAINS DON'T LET THEIR EYES SEE THEM.
OR MAYBE THEY ARE INVISIBLE UNLESS THEY WANT YOU TO SEE THEM.
OR MAYBE PEOPLE TURN INTO DRAGONS WHEN THEY DIE AND FLY AWAY INTO THE LIGHT.

if anyone has read the books that inspired this wonderful site. . .maybe the dragons tapped into the many uses of becoming SEPs. it's very likely. dragons were way too powerful to have just vanished like that. i mean, they didn't have time to go like the dinosaurs did. they just went out of fashion, and dissappeared. yeah, right.

I have heard that Eastern dragons were originally depicted as sea creatures, and what were later assumed to be wings were in fact fins.
The ocean gets down to more than 10 kilometers deep. Perhaps that is where they are.

I'd like to think that dragons still exist even if they don't exist here or if they choose to hide themselves from us.

Maybe they are just too great to exist on earth.

Wouldn't you kinda dissapear if your main food source developed armour piercing weaponry/land mines/nucear bombs and other such off-putting self-defence mechanisms?
I know I di....would...

uhmmm...is it such a Die Hard fact that it was the Dragon that went anywhere? Man* has been known to up an leave as well...

*This of course gender non-specific. Human, wo-/man and man(f/m) all seem so unwieldy.

Hmmm, I may just be a hopeless romantic, but I like to beleive that all sorts of dragons still exist in our world today. One thing I don't like about the way most sci-fi and fantasy authers group all dragons as either good or evil (depending on the auther). This idealism is shown in most representations of other species. When humans meet an alien race it is usualy much more unified than that of human's socity. They all either welcome us or attack us, not a mix. Similarly, dragons do not usualy have the same type of confused nature that we do. They are all good, or all bad, or even if ther are some of each there are usualy no traitors or loners. I guess it's just so nice to think of a species much more perfect than our own. I'm not sure how, but I think that dragons and other mythical creatures do exist.

PS. Could someone tell me what series of novels this entry was based on? I would love to read them. Thanks

I always thought of dragons as really smart, perfect and beautiful creatures. With there own personalities, thoughts and feelings but I never imagined them as mean or cruel as a lot of things seem to portray them. I guess I just I need some hope to cling to that there is some perfection in this world and my belief in dragons is it. They did exist and still do exist and where or how they exist is not for us to question, but to ponder.

I like the thought of dragons being good, kind and generous as portrayed by McCaffery and others of her ilk, but I am much more drawn to the vague ideas by Stasheff, Le Guin and Brown of a species that, though known not to be innately evil, are aloof and feared for the detachment they hold for the Human race.
After all, why the hell sould an intellegent species that is so much older, where the individual members live longer and with traditions older than the Human race itself, actually give a flying fig about what their actions mean to the 'small village at the edge of the mountains/forest/gully' where they reside. Relatively speaking, these people are going to die of natural causes next week anyway, so who cares?
The other interesting concept was brought up in 'The Hero and the Crown' (sorry can't remember the author) and by Moon in the ?Dragonslayer? that Dragons are not wise, or even intelligent, but just long-lived, big growing reptiles that just happen to spit fire/ice/acid as their defence/hunting tactics.
Ok, that's enough. I admit to being a very sad person, but I am just avoiding work now.

Hmmm, I know what you mean. My first thought of dragons is always the kind, loving, and heroic ones of Pern. I guess thats because it was my first introducton into the world of sci-fi/fantasy literature when my dad read them with me back in the 4th grade. That and Puff the Magic dragon, which is probly my favorite song in the world, which my mom used to sing to me. Now though, I think I feel the more human-like dragons are more likely whats out there, as I said befor. As for not caring about humans at all... do we not study other intelligent species such as dolphins, mice, and monkeys? Sure they may not want to protect us or destroy us, but I think they would have just a bit of interes in the little fleas overrunning the earth. Definatly something to ponder.

I WANT A PERN DRAGON!!!!
That having been said, I am in agreement with you. But that don't mean that they wouldn't do thoughtless things for their own gain...Look at what wdo when we encounter an ant's nest or wasp byre etc in/near our own homes! So maybe we should start looking for Dragon labs....Hey...maybe we're in one right now (Makes a change on the thought that our planet is really just and electron floating round the atom-core of yet another parallel universe...)
And Puff te Magic Dragon is great song...in all it's connotations....*Peace man*

Dosn't everyone want to be a dragonrider of Pern? I'v always wanted to be a bronze or brown rider. The only problem with that is that I'm female. Though if males can impress females I don't see why female can't impress males. hmph.
Anyways, about that earth being an atom thing... the earth could be a giant super computer that strange ape-like beings run about on stupidly thinking it's a planet. Or then again...
More seriously I think that fractal sorta universe of everthing always enlaging is quite likely, though it is rather baffling for the mind to comprehend. Hmmm, much to ponder...

PS. I would like to anounce that I detest the "z" key on my keyboard. Sometimes it works and sometimes it decides to undo my last move which sometimes includes the last paragraph of writing. The two times I had to use the hidious little devil of a key it could only be coaxed to work after hiting it at the same time as ctrl for after about 10 hittings. grrrrr!

I've never actually seen a dragon, but I do suspect that they exist. I recently moved out of an apartment that I'd been living in for four years. As I was becoming more ad more insane about the cleaning of this place (I really needed my security deposit back...) I decided to pull the 'fridge out to clean behind it. The blackened, greasy, dirty mess I found back there could only have been caused by a very large (guess it couldn't have been too large if it was living behind the refrigerator) creature of mythical proportions...

Ditto Chach...
Not overly impressed (no pun intended) by the fact that we wimmin are confined to the Golden Queens......Hmmmmm that could also be take anotherway...
Also, be glad it's justyou z key. This keyboard seems to think that my typing is so fast it doesn't recognise that I've punched half the keys I have....keep having to go back through everything to be sure the computer has ifgnored essential letters (or at least, that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it)
As to the world being not what it seems, we could also be either part of someone elses dream....see matrix...or just the pretty powersource/jewel in anther, much larger, galaxy ....see MIB. Anyhew, we'll all go mad if we keep this up!!!!!
Must do some of that w*rk stuff

Hmmm... can I blame all my messes on mythical creatures too?
As for contemplating the universe and the millions of ways that we could be fooling our selves I have discovered that the best time to disscus it is at 6 somethin in the morning while being kept in a semi-upright possition purely because the caffeine content in your body is so high. In this form me and a friend use to disscus many things such as when did time begin? did time begin? is there time or am I just a highly insane, sentient bacteria and all of the universe exept me (or possibly including me) is just a figment of my very over active imagination? dose space end? does it begin? what is life? could rocks be alive in a way we can not comprehend? does grass communicate with other grass? do dogs from one part of the world speak a different language from dogs from another? These questions are exedingly fassinating to debate. That could explain why a bit about the way I am. As for Matrix and MIB- those both bring up fassinating thoughts... I wonder? The Lathe of Heaven is an odd, not to good, old sci-fi flick. This guy actualy created his own dream world to continue living in right before he knew he would die. So his mind lived a lifetime in the few seconds before his death. very interesting.
Dragons? oh yeah that is what this page is 'sposed to be about. I'v thought about it for the last few days and come to the conclusion that many unknown things are out there. Every time I am away from civilization I tend to think the world might be much more then we see.

'There are more things in heaven and earth than can be explained in your philosophy' etc and to paraphrase....
And people wonder where all these writers get their ideas from? Think a bit about exactly what your late night/early morning convo's are about and I'm sure you can think of at least two books you've read in your life give some form of conjecture......
I've had those kind of convo's aswell...and they are much more fun and interesting than anything you can talk about while wide awake and with brain in gear. Maybe caffine actually does help the creative processes (and yet another excuse is born)
As such, I'm off to be creative *tee hee* but may expound a bit more when it isn't nine in the morning.......
