Edward the Bonobo - Gone.

Have you seen the Derren Brown thing when he gives readings to people in London and Spain? Everyone was convinced they got a good match...although all their readings were identical.

Yes, I've seen this, or at least something very like it - it was in a shopping centre, right? What these readings play on is that we all have a tendency towards anger, boredom, joy, elation, moodiness, intensity and indifference. It's the human condition. The power of suggestion can make us feel that some of these aspects are stronger than they actually are.

This one was in a more controlled environment and it had things like 'You are currently considering a cjange in career'. Well...who isn't?

And even if you are not considering a career change, then they put it to you that you did, or that you will be considering one. "Wow! that's amazing! How did you know that?" etc etc

I guess this counts as another example of Internet Ordering Madness...

On Friday, a placed a reservation for a printer, to be picked up from a local store. When I got the confirmation e-mail, I saw that they'd also reserved a USB cable for me. Which was very helpful of them and all...except...smiley - erm...it was a wireless printer.

(In fainess, I did need a USB cable to set it up - but I just used the one that came with it.)

Cool - I'm off to London tonight, and I will be attending the conference tomorrow and Sunday. I'm particularly looking forward to Simon Singh's talk. He is being sued by the British Chiropractic Association over an article he wrote about them. The whole affair has raised the issue of the utter unfairness of the libel laws in England, so it will be good to hear about this "from the horses mouth" as it were.

I'm also looking forward to hearing Richard Wiseman, and Phil Plait, the Bad Astronomer. I expect Phil will be waxing lyrical on the issue of anti-vaccination protestors.

Unfortunately James Randi is not going, as he is suffering from cancer and undergoing chemotherapy. He is expected to address the audience via a live video feed.

It promises to be a good weekend. I'll try to do a write-up after the conference if I can.
