I've just been passed fit from my medical, so I'm on course to start a new job in 2 weeks time. It will be in Cork, so I won't be travelling.
Am I happy? Hooooh yessiree!

I am so pleased for your Woodpigeon,
I hope it lives up to expectations, but being at home will be a blessing anyway.

Happy Birthday PC
And with the new job, WP. It's not good to be away from your kids when they're still wee.

Y'know, I never quite appreciated how important it was until I came back. Maybe I'm a home bird at heart.

Thanks for the wishes, Woodpigeon and Teuchter.
My dad didn't work far away from home, but he did work a second job for many years, and was hardly ever home when we kids were awake. I'm sure your little ones are as thrilled to have their daddy back home as you are to be there.

What's really great is the amount of free time I have right at this moment. I can't remember having had 4 weeks off for quite a while. I've managed to dust off the camcorder and get out with the younglings as much as possible over the last few days.

Is this what's called 'Gardening Leave?' You wouldn't like to pop over and dig mine while you're at it? I have the inclination but not the time.
Yeah...getting a job which matches your domestic circumstances is definitely A Good Thing. Face it...we only have jobs so that we can sustain our loved ones.
Work Medicals...
I once had an interview with a major manufacturer of lighbulbs and other electrical goods. They gave me a full medical on the day I attended the interview! . The whole works - blood, lung function test, pissing into a beaker. I mentioned that I have a congenital back problem and the doctor said that I probably shouldn't take a heavy, manual job. I told him,
'That's the whole reason I went to university!'
The other thing I remember about the interview was that one of the guys was called Mr van der Pump. . And that for lunch, they brought in a tray of traditional small rolls:
'So...we have eel, horse...Enjoy!'

Where was that? I think I can imagine..
Child-minding leave, more like. I have to pull my budding gardeners out of the muck on a regular basis.
The medical was pretty similar to what you mentioned. I never had to submit to a urine test before.

I'll give you a clue...the lightbulb manufacturer also has a football team.
I wonder what they were testing for? Whatever it was, they'd have found *plenty* in my system if they'd waited another couple of days.

Congratulations WP, I'm sure it'll be great for you all with you back home.
I've only once had to have a medical like that before a job (going into an IT support role in a bank in the city). I did get a nice report on my health at that point from them (it was an independent medical practice/consultancy) that would have cost me several hundred pounds if I'd paid for it myself.

Thanks all. Yes, I have a medical check fairly regularly these days so I wasn't concerned about anything else. Mind you I'm getting more myopic as the years go by. Ho hum: back to buying (and immediately losing) glasses again..

Well my eyes are -4.50 and -6.00. You can see why I wear contacts. Unfortunately I'm also at the age where I'm begining to need longer arms.
