A book that dare not speak its name

I'm reading a book I bought at the airport today entitled "Is it just me or is everything [four letter word deleted by me for fear of retribution but think of something brown, smelly and biological that has the same sound as "Pritt". Got it? Good.]" which is giving me a few laughs at the moment. It's a kind of "Grumpy Old Men" style tirade on modern life in book form, and I guess that, now that I am starting to enter that age-group, some of the things in the book resonate with me. It is absolutely *not* for anybody who is offended by profanities, but it's truly amazing what a well placed swear word will do to get a fine belly-laugh out of me.

Ah, profanities. Those were the days... smiley - laugh

Oh, Woodpigeon, my little smiley - peacedove you have a long way to go before reaching the "grumpy old man' stage, but if you want lessons I have the perfect teacher right here.smiley - rofl

I have watched some of the grumpy old men, grumpy old women programmes on BBC2 which have been quite funny. Don't know if you get the station where you are.

Keep smiley - smiley. The book does sound a hoot!!

"Is it Just Me or is Everything Shit? The Encyclopedia of Modern Life." Alan McArthur. Good airport reading, will not win the Booker Prize though.

Aha, the filter is ok with this after all!

It sounds entertaining. I've not quite reached "old lady" status yet, myself, but I do feel myself pulled in a crotchety direction. smiley - winkeye

Gnomon - time to move on

I didn't read that book, Woodpigeon. The grumbling attitude of the title doesn't fit in with my world view of incurable optimism.smiley - smiley

But as far as I remember, it was a five-letter word rhyming with "white".

Y'know, its one of those books that doesn't quite live up to the promise of the first few pages. After chapter 7, the novelty of "ooh, look, he's just used the "f" word, and heavens, the "c" word too" starts to wear off.

A bit of old "smite" all right.
