I put this on the ask page but I thought I'd seek the views of my 'special' friends! I'll keep you posted as to how it is going, so far the website is up and running and we are hoping to go and visit the bank and funeral directors/hospices next week. The only thing that is hard is that it is dependant on people losing loved ones and at such a hard time in thier life. I wish though that we had been given the number for just this sort of thing when we needed it

My other half is hoping to set himself up providing non religious funeral ceremonies for people who would like a funeral service but for reasons of personal choice don't want the religious aspect. I just wondered what peoples views were on setting up a service like this. I know people don't like to talk about death but it's about the only thing you can be sure of (even taxes can be dodged on occasion!) We have set up a website but I don't know what the rules at h2g2 are for printing it in a discussion like this.

Sounds like a very good idea to me - the company I mean
I'm sure there will be lots of customers
Do I remember something similar a few years ago - somewhere round the quantocks?
Might be worth a google to see what's about eh!

ooh a company, that sounds good! When he spoke to the bank they ask how many people he would employ and he said'just me' so they said they'd refer to him as the Managing Director! The humanists do a similar thing but you have to do their course which is several hundred pounds.
Hows you then sshh? ?

Ah well B'el, you're on the special 'special' list!
Thanks for all your encouragement, off to see the bank next week, hopefully they'll have some useful advice (tax etc) not just a list of personal loans we can have

Hi Chorlton,
Thanks for the message on my page and the promt to come here. It is most certainly an excellent idea.
Similar schemes have been up and running for years; some of them even one step further, here is one local to my area....

Any service you wish, any religion or not as the case may be, they are even licenced for pets. The operators (by co-incidence) were being interviewed on out local Radio this morning. They now have a micro-chip identificatio for the grave (you would need to 'prime' the search device from a bar code on the records)ie, you only find the resting place of your loved ones, having been pointed in the right direction of course. The device is inert and only reacts given the appropriate stimulation, it is in the form of a long-life plastic rod inserted in the ground next to the head.
I'm sure that given your obvious brain you can google a few websites to tempt your Bank Manager, suggest "green burial" "alternative burial" that sort of thing. Bank managers are interested in PROFIT, not care or ecology and that is what you have to hit him/her with.
To be honest I can't see you failing.
Hope this helps (you've probably done it all already but it doesn't hurt to repeat and encourage does it).
Quack.

Jemstone Posted Jun 6, 2006
Hi Chorlton!
That sounds like a good idea. I for one am not religious, but would like some kind of ceremony if I ever pop my clogs for people to say goodbye to me! And my Mum has already given me details of how she wants her send off which is to be cremated in a cardboard box (pointless spending tons of money on a posh coffin to burn it in her opinion) and then have her ashes placed where a new tree is planted. It's one of those green burials which are getting more popular, and I wish you and hubby all the luck in the world for your new venture! I'll keep my fingers crossed that the bank manager grants your wishes. Good luck honey

Sounds like a good idea to me chorlton. I've often wondered what you would do if you found yourself in that sort of situation.
Not dead obviously.
But organising a funeral for a non-religios person

Hi Taz
Hope you had a good trip. Was it Norway you went to? I've always wanted to go there
The problem was exactly that, we had to arrange my Dad's funeral knowing that he had absolutely no time for what he saw as the hypocrisies of the church (he was made to be a choir boy as a teenager 'very much keeping up appearances' while my Nan stayed at home. He did use to bunk off though and go and watch the trains and play his guitar, hence having Johnny B Goode played at the service!)
Hi Jem! long time no chat, hope all is well with you, might pop over and resurrect our thread

I'm thinking Jemstone's Mum's burial is exactly what I'd like for myself. I don't really think it's relevant now, but in the future it would be comforting to know that it's not all about death, and there's a tree growing on my ashes rather than a piece of expensive, useless marble.
Needless to say, I think this is a very good idea and I hope it all goes/went well.
