The Tetragramaton, the four Hebrew letters which form the name of God, is found over 7,000 times in the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament). The translation of these scriptures into Greek, the Septuagint, carries over the Tetragramaton untranslated. Since the writers of the Christian Greek Scriptures (the New Testament) quote several times from the Septuagint it is natural to assume that it was also found there, though it does not appear in any extant manuscripts.

The pronunciation has been lost due to Jewish superstition but the usual English rendering is Jehovah.

See Appendix 1 of the New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures--With References.

The pronunciation of our Heavenly Father and Creator's Name has not been lost according to the Encyclopedia Britannica and the Encyclopedia Judaica. Se my webpage at: http://www.maxpages.com/yahshua/Yahweh

Since you refer to the New World Translation, are we to assume you are a JW? If so, then write to me at [email protected], for I am one from the Fleetwood Congregation.

Im not a member of Jehovah's Organization yet as I am not baptised but I am studying at the moment. My ultimate goal in life is to be baptised and to become a member of the only true Christian faith on earth.

The Catholic Encyclopedia (1910), says 'Jehovah' is “the proper name of God in the Old Testament.”

Thanks to h2g2, I was able to finish my research this by looking at the views of the AOY at Bible Groups Pickings. I just want to thank everyone at H2G2 for this space and also, for helping me to find a respectable review site on different Chirstian denominations.

From the site:
Yahweh was undisputedly the name of the Biblical Mighty One - the Elohim of the Jews -according to many sources, including the New Bible Dictionary; Encyclopedia Judaica; Vol. 7, James Moffatt in ‘A New Translation of the Bible’; Seventh Day Adventist Bible Commentary; Jewish Encyclopedia, Vol. 9 and Encyclopedia Britannica, 11th edition. Regardless, the Name is replaced by substitutes “God”,”Lord”, “Adonai” and other titles in Christianity and Judaism, and also replaced by other more modern forms such as Jehovah and Yahovah. All these other names, the Assemblies of Yahweh claim, are just another ploy to prevent people from getting to the Truth and the Assemblies of Yahweh.

Well, the pronunciation has been lost. Hebrew was originally written without vowels. By the time vowels were added, the practice was not to pronounce the name, so the vowels for Adoni (Lord) were used instead. Hence the name "Jehovah", which is almost certainly wrong. But "Yahweh" is no more than a scholars' guess. There is some evidence for a trisyllabic pronunciation from personal names which included elements of the Tetragrammaton.
