Analysing Eustacia as a character who is "competing in I'm A Typical Tragic Literary Character - Get Me Out Of This Unhappy Circumstance!" is surely a little too unkind. But the point abaout her cross dressing is interesting. Hardy maybe ended up creating a character far more modern and with far more complexities than he had intended to.
