"The Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson is to remake classic British war film The Dam Busters"
Awww, nooooooo.
The original is a classic. I would feel very uncomfortable watching a new interpretation. How can they improve on something which is a part of my childhood?

Having thought about this for literally 20 seconds, I think a re-make is quite a good idea.
The Dambusters, like Jason And The Argonauts, is one of those films which should be avidly watched up to the age of 11 and then fondly remembered thereafter.
I remember watching it recently and thinking how ridiculously plummy the acting was, how naff the special effects were and how stereotype-mad-scientist Michael Redgrave was. As long as no Yanks are cast, a remake can't really fail to improve on it.

Funnily enough, we were discussing remakes in the pub on Monday night. I'm not too keen on them, as a straight scene for scene remake seems pointless to me and stupid changes like setting 'The Italian Job' in the States and not even mentioning Italy just irritate me to no end.

According to the article, Mel Gibsn was originally going to direct and star in it.

Shamelessly copied, but it made me laugh and I wanted to share -

If the Americans re-made the film...
1. The boffin would be the Mad Prof off Back to the Future
2. Bruce Willis would be the Squadron Leader. The attack would feature him in a sweat grey vest trying to release a recalcitrant 'hopping bomb'.
3. The bouncing bomb is not interesting enough. The Mad Prof would have remembered his days as a basketball player in Krapp City High School and would hav demonstrated how the 'bouncing bomb' would be passed back and forth amongst the Flying Fortresses (did you expect a Lancaster? Black is soooo passe) before being dropped into a net.
4. The dog would be replaced by Samuel Jackson, Bruce's Flight Lootenant who will be run over. The Americans will not understand the irony of this choice.

I wonder if they'll get Will Young to sing the new theme tune? After all Gareth thingy might struggle with his stutter?

I wonder if it's time for a remake of Miami Vice. They might want to include a plausible plot next time.

'The Italian job' was too good to remake, as was 'Get Carter'.
Funnily enough, we've just arranged to go and see 'The Wicker Man' this Monday, and i'm not overly confident that Nicholas Cage is going to be able to emulate the great Edward Woodward performance.

Thank you airscotia - I'd almost forgotten about the remake of The Wicker Man.
The original was and is great - well I think so.
Will you let me know what you think of the Nicholas Cage version please ?
And, anyone know who is playing the inn keepers daughter ?
Thanks

Here's a thought...
Remake Star Wars (parts 1-6), with plausible technology and a script that's slightly better than a Mills & Boon novel. Oh, and throw in some acting.

Kate Beahan(who-she?) is playing 'willow' the inn-keepers daughter, but in this version she is the ex-girlfriend of the police officer, and it's her daughter who has gone missing
Still, musn't be too pessimistic, it might be a cinematic tour de force eh? I'll keep you posted.
