We took the girls out of school today to attend the state Farm Show (A732818) and spend the entire day there. Agriculture is so important in Pennsylvania that attending the farm show is an excused absence!
They saw a chick hatch. They petted sheep, goats, rabbits, horses, cows and even a deer. They ate and ate and ate - though the favourite seems to have been the cotton candy (candy floss) spun from maple syrup sugar.
All in all, it was a fun-filled day and even the weather cooperated.

The state fair is also an excused absence in Texas -- on "fair day", kids have the option of going with a school-organized trip or going with their families.
I love me a good fair, especially all the 4H exhibits. Oh, and the little old ladies with their vegetable arrangements.

I wonder if state fair attendance is excused across the country of just in places like Texas and Pennsylvania...

I don't think it is here in Washington, although it might be in some individual school districts. In Texas, even the urban kids went to the state fair, but that definitely doesn't happen here -- I think the location of the fair plays into that.
