Yo, Metaphiston here. Had an idea.

Do you think we could have a science fiction writing competition whereby members post links on a discussion board and the judges (e.g, the owners?) choose a winner. It could be a fortnightly or monthly event. Your thoughts? smiley - smiley

I'm up for it. A couple of the new members really seem to be getting stuck in.

The only thing is, we wouldn't be able to offer anything as a prize other than our humble respect. If that will wash then I say go for it!

Rather than have everyone post their old works, why don't we set a subject each time and a strict word limit (say 1000 words). That way people would keep having to come up with something new.

Thoughts?

Sure. What about the subject? A word? A theme? A first line?

After we've decided that then all that remains is to set up a board with the subject and how to post a link to an entry.

We could set up a board to decide the subject. Shall I?

I think you and I should set a subject. If we open every decission to the committee then it will go round and round in circles.

The subject could be any of the things that you mentioned, it will be more varied than just having to 'write about' somthing.

I think the word count should be about 1000 words, in case we have to read lots of them...

We should use a consistent scoring system, say marks out of 10 for things like:

Style
Imagination
Originality
Sticking to the subject

I'd rather not judge on things like grammar and punctuation, as I'm rubbish at them too.

I'm more than happy for you to set it up. We need to decide on the scoring system first, so we can tell them what it is. Then all we have to do is give them a subject like 'The Ultimate Weapon' and go nuts.

I think it'll be good.
Let me know your thoughts.

'The Ultimate Weapon'. Yeah... sounds good.

1000 word limit.

Points out of ten for:

Style
Imagination (originality included in this category)
Relevance to the subject
Enjoyability ( a bit subjective, I know)

We will both judge all entries then average the results.

I have set the board up. The categories are Imagination, Relevance to the subject, Style and Enjoyability. When we review the title of the review will be Sci Fi Competition. That all
o.k?

Yup, looks great.
Might need to set and end date. Give it two or three weeks, something like that.
Then we'll have to take a week off work to read them all (hopefully).
