The Bible

Post 1

Kate Schechter (Back on the right side of the pond)

With the dramatic transition from high heels clicking on tile to the whisper of carpet, I entered it - my mecca, my haven, the hallowed halls of Waldenbooks. I have a rather nasty habit of buying the first thing that I see when I walk in to this dizzying place, a compulsion that has led to me to both wondrous and horrid places. Today, however, there it was, my Bible, not of the King James or Gideon variety, but of the Douglas Adams variety - bound in black leather, gilded pages, and the 2 bonus stories which I have furiously sought but until last night, never attained. I gladly forked over the 15 dollars (while petulantly refusing to join the club that asks me to pay 10 dollars, as I do every time, even as my math tells me that I would have saved over 50 dollars this year) and now, gracing my shelves, my proof: I have arrived in the sainted domain of DNA lovers everywhere. I seek only welcome, and respite from the sanity of the rest of the world.

TWO short stories you say? My leather bound gilt edged bible only contains one short story --
"Young Zaphod Plays It Safe." Mine also stops at "So Long & Thanks etc." but this is probably
due to its advanced age. Nevertheless, I can't help feeling a certain amount of disappointment
that my bible is now inferior. I will get onto Amazon as soon as you reveal to us all, dear Kate, the
full and complete title of this indispensable Bible.

The full and complete name of the text is "The Ultimate Hitchhikers Guide", and I am now agape as I realize the the title makes no reference to the Galaxy, which, I imagine, underscores its versatility in all imaginable situations... It does indeed have Young Zaphod Plays It Safe as well as Mostly Harmless, which is quite interesting. I paid 15 for it at Waldenbooks, so I imagine you can get quite a deal from Amazon.
