I would like to disagree with the article on using acylic paint. With the exception of white acrylic paint, acrylic colours are not opaque. Any colour already on your paper or canvas will show through when you over paint it with another colour. To make a colour opaque, you need to add a small amount of white which will then give you an opaque colour.

You must be diluting your colours too much. You shouldn't add any water to acrylics - you'll then find they are completely opaque.

Mine even come with a guide to their transparency on the tube. They are not all opaque.
