After 4 days in Munich, we headed down across the alps to Venice - lovely scenery along the way smiley - smiley

Venice was as lovely as I remember it, and altho we got lost on the first nght, we got the hang of navigating using the signs pointing to the Rialto (as we were staying near there), Piazza San Marco and Alla Ferrovia (the train station). We ended up staying most of an extra day as a strike by the Italian train staff delayed our departure until 5(not disastrous - I can think of worse places to waste a day!). We spent the next night in Trieste near the Slovenian border, then crossed over the next day and headed for the world heritage listed Skocjan cave. After missing our station (I was off looking unsuccessfully for a functioning toilet) we had to backtrack. Then we had a very pleasant 4km walk thru the forest to the cave. Alas, this is the off season, and it's only open on sunday so it was something of a wasted effort but still a very nice walk thru part of the original Karst region, after which other are named (fellow geography nerds will recognise what I'm on about!).

Then we made it to Ljubljana in the evening and met up with Pete (rover) and his brother, which had found an apartment for the 4 of us, so we dumped our gear and went out for a traditional meal of game goulash with a half litre of good local beer smiley - smiley

Tonight we are catching a bus overnight to Split in Croatia, home of Diocletian's palace and after that will head south again to Dubrovnik.

Love to all, more soon smiley - smiley

geography nerds?
should I take offence to that?

yay for karst and caves though. Ryan and I spent the weekend climbing in and out of Monolith valley, and up Mt Owen in the Budawang National Park. Not karst, but very impressive.

is a link to somebody else's hike photo's from pretty much the same walk. The pictures where they are passing up a back pack over rocks gives a very good impression of the general terrain. my hike group kept there clothes on though...

i think your weekend sounded much more relaxing...
