The article feels as though it is not quite finished. Any thoughts about including some of the minority parties or should I expand the two main points?

Not bad, with a few problems, and in need of a spell checker, but definitely a good start.

Unless you're going to change the title to Modern American Political Parties, I'd at least include a mention of the platform of the Whigs, Federalists (I wouldn't describe them, in one word as you have, as elitist... thought they may very well have been... their basic philosophy was a strong federal government, which wasn't a very bad idea except that they were a mean party) Free Soilers, Democratic Republicans, Green, Reform... etc.

I assume you're talking about George Washington's farewell address? Best to cite it, I should think.

Also, the Democrats today aren't really the same party as the Jefferson's Democratic-Republicans (who, by the way, ironically called themselves Republicans). They have roots there, but aren't really the same party.

If you're going to mention the roots of the Democrats, you should probably mention the Republican roots. The Kansas Nebraska Act, abolitionism... that stuff.

And perhaps parrty symbols and nicknames. Republicans are the GOP, have the Elephant, and their color is red. The Democrats have a Donkey and their color is blue.

Overall, definitely not bad. Glad to see you're open to suggestions though. And I'd love to help if you need me to clear up some of my more confusing points. It's late after all, so I imagine this post is a bit jumbled in thought.
