Nice to see that someone from over there is over here and doing a great job of apologetics/explanations of what Wikipedia is and does. I think I agree with everything you've said here on the topic. As I like to say over there, happy editing!

Thanks for your note. I look in here only occasionally.

I think that h2g2 is more of a community than Wikipedia. One consequence is that it's easier to drop in on Wikipedia, by simply making an edit to an article. On h2g2, participation turns more on personal relations, which of course don't spring up overnight.

One part of the site that's most Wiki-ish is Peer Review. You can't just make the change to someone else's copy, but you can at least opine as to how it should be changed. I'd recommend Peer Review as a feature you should check out if you want to get to know h2g2 better.

Just remember, when you come "home" to Wikipedia, that the MediaWiki software does NOT support smileys. The hootooites seem rather besotted with them....

I think you're definitely right about h2g2 being more of a community. As I think you mentioned somewhere I read, Wikipedia is really about creating an encyclopedia, which is why there is much less unrelated discussion.

I'm still just starting with those personal relations you talk about here on h2g2.

Thanks for the recommendation of Peer Review. I will definitely check it out.

Yeah, I know that MediaWiki doesn't support smileys, but somehow, I've never missed them. I guess for me, ":D" is just as expressive as smiley - biggrin.

Later!
