The Boss and I are pretty daft sometimes. Today is a perfect illustration of just how we can be. Last weeks local rag 'The Cornishman' had a voucher in it giving five quid off a meal for two in the local Brewsters. We decided to take advantage of this wonderful offer. As it has been another wonderful day we left home early thinking we would grab a bit of beach time before and after the meal. However on the way to Hayle where we were going to eat The Boss thought it would be a good idea to just 'Have a look at the Wyevale Garden Centre'. Not to buy anything because we were only out for a meal and the beach. £32:50 later we staggered out of the garden centre with clematis french marigolds a beautiful hanging basket full of begonias and a pot plant for the house. So our voucher cost us a small fortune beforewe ate a thing. However the meal was great, lasagne for the boss and chicken wrapped in bacon for me. Then we went to Long Rock beach. The sea still. deep blue, and wonderful. We both had books and set ourselves up for a peaceful afternoon. The Mount looked like a castle from a fantasy story and the whole thing could have come straight out of a fairy tale.... However, we were disturbed by loud and continous barking and several people on the beach were pointing out to sea. On The long rock itself which is about a mile off shore when the tide is in we could see a dog on the rocks barking like mad. A couple of lads started to swim out to the animal. A helicopter flew low over head and surveyed the scene and soon after we could hear the wail of a siren. Two coastguard vehicles came onto the beach. They had to get over the level crossing which luckily was open. It has to close quite often as it is the main line to Penzance station. While all this was going on the dog jumped off the rocks into the sea and started swimming strongly for the shore. There was a woman standing at the waters edge and to our surprise she waded in to the dog and when it reached her put the dog on a lead and calmy started to walk away with it. At that the coastguards and one of the swimmers who had by this time reached the shore also ran after her, The woman kept walking as fast as she couls inspite of their shouts. Eventually they caught up with her and there was a lot of gesticulating from the men and nearly as much from her. After a time she was allowed to walk off with the dog. When the coastguard came back he told the little group of us who had watched this with fascination that this woman had been responsible for call outs several times before, that other people had thought the dog was in trouble and had called them out but they were obliged to answer all calls. The dog was never in any danger but several times people had risked their lives to swim out to it. In spite if all this the woman still takes her dog to the same beach DAILY to have it's swim. It seems unbelievable but it is true. And while all this was going on I was standing in the sun and now I have burnt the tops of my feet.
Any way I have put the plants in hung up the basket and watered the garden again!!
