What a great article!! You have done your homework here (I assume you have submitted it for rejection??). Good intro to the place for the drinker - and some great suggestions for places to go.
I reckon you were a wee bit hard on the New Sydney - loud music yes, but people do go there to socialise, and to listen to the music (unavoidable) and to be in an "Irish" pub. Good range of ales and stouts etc on tap, and it is the focus for the Irish Society in Hobart. There is also a regular session of Irish musicians on Saturday afternoons. So ... I like it.
The St Ives is another good spot, as they have a range on their own beers on tap - brewed on the premises - from lagers to dark ales. Pretty good, and on Friday afternoons, free snack food.
Anyway ... another hitchiker in Hobart ... I am not alone!

Thanks! I may have been a little harsh on the new syd, but I don't know if you've everr been there when there is an American carrier in town- that was the last time that i went, and left soon after arriving. i suppose that it just sorta left a bad taste in my mouth after that. Anyhow- thanks again for the kind words, and go to it!

Good point about the US carrier visits - I have been in the New Syd then and it is another world! If you're into Irish music, they have Rakish Paddy there on Wednesday nights.

I'm afraid I don't remember many of the watering holes etc. in Hobart - I've been VERY drunk in some of them, though!
The St. Ives was pretty good when we were there in Christmas 1998, and O'Reilly's was visited at about the same time. Several of the others I have only a very indistinct memory of, however...
Is there a bar on Mt. Wellington, yet...?!

No bar on Mt Wellington ... though there is a millenium party, as this is the first place in Australia that will see the light of the new year (curve of the planet this far south, height, and all that).
Merry new millenuim!

Make sure you get them organised so that the real Millenium Party goes off next year without a hitch...!
Try to get that permanent "bar on the mount" organised before then too: a business idea...?
