They do it for 2 reasons: part of a courtship ritual between male and female (obviously) and some say that males also box to determine territories.
I have to admit that *my* hares are so far away in the middle of the fields when they're boxing that I haven't got a hope of determining their sex. I like to think of it as aphrodiasic banter!
