I have been trying to control my impulsive tendencies as much as possible, but I find I am unable to stop breathing for more than a few minutes.

Were you trying to put an end to all your impulsive tendencies in one go? You could try them one by one. Then you might find life becoming more comfortable before getting round to stopping the breathing...just an idea...
