h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

Welcome to h2g2!

Before you start to wonder, I am a real person and not a computer-generated welcome message! As one of the ACEs (Assistant Community Editors), I have volunteered to greet newcomers to the site and help them get their feet under them.

I saw that you haven't done much with your personal space yet. Don't worry it's not a requirement or anything! But it is helpful to give a bit of an introduction to folks will know who you are and why you're here...

Personally, I've been around for going on five years and I still get a kick out of Douglas Adams' (u42) original idea of creating a virtual, online edition of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I've written, contributed to or edited hundreds of entries to help fill the site. So if you've got questions about the editorial process or writing for the Guide, I reckon I'm a good one to ask.

If you're more interested in just getting your bearings, I'd highly suggest taking the h2g2 Tour at A317459. The Tour pages give you a really good overview of what we're all about!

Thanks for the warm and personal greeting message, and what a remarkable response time you've got. I only subscribed 70 seconds ago and already I have a lengthy handshake-style greeting. Wow!
I've been a huge fan of the Douglas Adams trilogy from the time I first encountered it at 12. I don't read a hell of a lot, but these books opened so many doors for me, and I was saddened by Adams'untimely passing. I think it's great that this site has taken the mission of realizing the concept of the Guide, and I look forward to posting some groundbreaking material soon...

Back in 99 when the site first opened, Douglas wrote some entries and even commented on some of the 'amateur' stuff we submitted. A lot of his 'calls for entries' in Salmon of Doubt resulted in entries here on the site.

And as for the response time, they give us greeters extra for the UK evening rush!
