I'm quite fond of the cover you deem to be worse - but that's because I know the book.

That rabbit looks really as mean as it is.

In the animation of WD, there are some pretty gritty scenes. If they put some of them on the cover nobody would buy it for kids.

"We'd better not risk another frontal assault, that rabbit's dynamite."

Oh, hang on...

but... Watership Down - it's not really a book for kids is it? It's like all those people thinking "oh yeah, Animal Farm, that's a cartoon film, right? we'll take the kids to see that"

But they spoiled Animal Farm by giving it a happy ending...

It may not strictly be a children's book, but I don't think it would be purely an adult's book. Kids could certainly read it - I think I read when I was eight or nine.

It's not for kids, but those covers make it look a lot cuddlier than it is. Must reread it, actually. And must watch the film one of these days.
