Memoratius

Here in the States, we have a unique little holiday...unique in the sense that I don't believe it's celebrated in any other country, & (truth be told) is not celebrated in large parts of THIS country. Be that as it may, some in this country (including myself) wind up with a holiday, a day to honor a man who got lost, didn't find what he was looking for, & who never set foot in North America, anyway (the closest he got was the island of Hispanola, now divided into Haiti & the Dominican Republic).

Well, with a whole day off, the tendency is to want to do something grand, something you don't do the rest of the time. Unfortunately, the holiday falls during a fallow time: it's too dreary to do much outside, can't go to any ballgames (unless you live in Anaheim, California for baseball & Pittsburgh for American football, with basketball not having yet begun their season & no hockey matches scheduled today...of course, a cricket match is out of the question), there's no parade in my city...well, you get the idea. I'm listening to Prokofiev's 'Romeo & Juliet' right now. I know what you're thinking: I really know how to party. Well, depressingly, that's the highlight of my day: earlier, went to a public laundremat, as I needed to wash bed blankets & my little washer won't handle them. That took longer than expected. Then, went to the market (stop him, I hear you saying...okay, I'll try to wrap it up). Then went to the noon mass at St Benny's, a church I don't usually get the chance to attend. Saw an old friend of my gram's there who lives in this city, but knew my grandmother decades ago; gram's been dead 20 years now. It was nice to see her. Then, home.

So, it's a bit past noon now, & I'm looking for things to do. Besides listen to Prokofiev. I should work on lesson plans, but my brain wants to veg out & watch something stupid on tv so it can go on holiday, too. We'll see who wins. Cheers!

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
