stilton village

Having lived in Stilton on and off from 87to97. I found the comments on the "home"page to be somewhat in conflict with my memories of the place. Not all of the comments but certainly some of them.
As you may gather from my nick name,I was a resident of Oak Rd. When I moved to the village, Oak Rd was accessable from the A1 as a 90 degree left turn when travelling northbound. One could also access the Southbound carriageway from the south of the village by crossing the dual carriageway and turning south.
The Angel was not open initially, but after some extensive refurb work eventually opened as a pub.( I seem to recall it having been a club of some sort, or there was a club involved in it somewhere) The Talbot was run by some extremely grumpy old b#####r who I seem to recall had an amazing collection of "miniatures" (single shot spirit bottles)But it changed hands acouple of years befor I moved on. The "Cheese" was or tried to be an up market restruant (I wish I could spell)and was very cliqueish. The Bell was, and I would imagine still is, world famous a)as The Coach stop on the old A1. and b) (not alot of people know this)as the pub having the largest piece of ornate steelwork supporting its pub sign in the country. At the time I moved to Stilton the Bell had not had the extensive refurb which gave it its glass frontage, and encapsulated the buildings to the left of the glass fronted archway.
Amongst other changes during my time in Stilton were the conversion of one of the tiny cottages fronting High street into a postoffice. Also the transformation of the derelict showroom and workshop into a Rolls Royce specialist sales and repair operation.
