h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

Everyone thinks that when you say: “Christmas was nice. Yeah, really quiet and nice. Just the family y’know. It was nice.” that you don’t really mean it and what you actually mean is: “Christmas? Yeah it was dull. Didn’t do a damn thing and got stuck with the family the whole time.” But to be honest I quite enjoy having a chance (and an excuse) to do nothing for a couple of days. I don’t get home often enough and usually when I do it’s just for a weekend and I tend to spend the whole time trying to catch up with everyone and not quite managing it.

As predicted Christmas day was just my parents and I. We watched a couple of movies, ate a lot of food and drank an enormous amount of wine (or maybe that was just me). And to top it all off it actually snowed on Christmas day! I took the dog for a walk before bed and took a couple of photographs round the old neighbourhood.

Yesterday was a bit weird. There was a huge earthquake in the Asia Pacific area causing tsunami all around the pacific-rim; thousands of people were killed. One of the countries worst hit was Sri Lanka, which is where my girlfriend is from so her and her family have all be terribly worried about all their friends and family over there. Thankfully their family are all okay, but it’s a small island and they’re bound to know people who’ve been effected. It kind of puts things in perspective when something like that happens.

I don’t want to end on a depressing note, because it is Christmas after all. So time for some good news. My brother and his girlfriend came over today with my nephew. I haven’t seen them for ages (maybe as long ago as last Easter?) and it was really nice to see them. But the really good news my parents told me the other day, my brother’s girlfriend is pregnant so I’m going to be an Uncle again next year.

Right, well tonight I’m going into town to play a couple of games of pool with an old friend from Wolverhampton University. So I’d better be off.
