Hi Peter,
I am pleased to report that Harry Hawthorne has replied to me. He was in C Coy 5th KOSBs and his time in France probably overlapped with my fathers. He is going to write an account of the time spent in France immediately after Dunkirk 12th to 19th June. He is also going to write a bit more about the battle in Waldfeucht where he (and my father) was captured. It's a pity that I can't remember all the threads to questions I asked about France immediately after Dunkirk.

With regards to my OU, I actually haven't been to a summer school as all the courses I chose did not have one. There seems to be less and less of them these days. With the children (now aged 14 and 13) it would have been very difficult for me to go. Perhaps cost is a problem for people too; my course next year without a summer school is nearly £1,000! Anyway, must be off to revise for THE EXAM which is on 18th Oct.

All the best
Marjorie

Marjorie

Many thanks for your message regarding your father's unit, I look forward to reading Harry's account.

As for the OU, I didn't realise it had become so expensive. But the standards are, thank goodness, very high and it is still good value. I found studying at a traditional university much less rigourous and taxing than the OU. Good luck with smiley - starsmiley - starTHE EXAMsmiley - starsmiley - star

Dear Peter,

Harry has been communicating quite a lot - see my page under 5th KOSB capture. So far about their time in France from 12th to 19th June 1940. I think my Dad would have loved to have talked to him, however, can't do anything about that.

Marjorie
