THE GRAND SLAM

Gothly's uncle died suddenly yesterday morning, in his sleep, at the age of 65. It was a shock to everyone: he was of good health and not exactly aged. Nobody in the family can quite believe it.
Like everyone on Gothmum's side of the family, he was a huge rugby fan. Wales has been doing extraordinarily well in the Six Nations this year. Weekend after weekend he must have watched in amazement as our men pulled their socks up and kept wining and winning and winning: a hell of a turnaround from last year's performance. There was one game left to be played when he died.
This afternoon, we and the rest of Gothly's family sat in front of the box in our various homes (and pubs) and watched the final game: Wales against Ireland. Gigantic inflatable daffodils were being waved all over the stands in the Millennium Stadium. The game was ferocious, and the Irish looked as angry as all hell; everyone was fired up. One Irish player even leapt on top of a Welsh player and started pummelling him, while the ball itself moved off to the far side of the field. In the final minute of the game, it became clear to everyone that Wales had won the Grand Slam. The last time we did that was in 1978, when I was just five years old. Some of the players would not even have been born then.
Now a sense of euphoria mixed with sorrow is permeating Gothly's family. The uncle didn't get to see this victory, so we all watched it for him and drank to him. The Grand Slam, and this sudden death: neither one seems real yet.

I agree that the Welsh sucess is a little unreal... This time 'round I haven't followed the Rugby as closely I have in the past, I'm convinced that by not watching the rugby I have helped Wales to victory.
Tis sad timing indeed for his death. If I had a pint I'd toast both his and the rugby...

Thank you for your hand in our magnificent win. Please do us a favour and avoid watching it next year too, okay? (You may watch the highlights if you wish.)

"Nobody in the family can quite believe it."
I think that's relatively normal. It's also probably quite often the case that somebody misses something by dying which other people think they would have wanted to be around to see. However, there are also instances of people saying it was a good job someone wasn't still around for something.
"Gigantic inflatable daffodils"
I'd be expecting them to attack people by spraying clingfilm in their faces.
"I'm convinced that by not watching the rugby I have helped Wales to victory."
I get that impression about sports every so often. I don't watch many though. So there aren't many I can do a favour by missing.

"I think that's relatively normal."
Of course. Even gradual deaths can be a shock when the person's life finally ends.
Poor Gothmum looks really spooked at the loss of her brother. If I lost one of my brothers, I'd be beside myself. He's not the only member of the extended family who's died suddenly, either, so Gothly keeps waking up in the night to check that I'm breathing. If I go for a walk, I must describe my exact route beforehand.
Poor Gothly's family.
"I get that impression about sports every so often. I don't watch many though. So there aren't many I can do a favour by missing."
The Grand Prix is the next thing you need to be sure to miss.
While we're on the subject, can anyone control the weather? I can make it rain by hanging washing on the line, but I'm looking for someone who can counteract that effect.

"looks really spooked"
She isn't actually seeing ghosts and being haunted is she?
"be sure to miss"
I normally miss the Grand Prix so I won't be making any difference there if I miss it again. I wonder if any of my software is still in one of the racing cars though.
"control the weather"
Taking an umbrella out is quite a good general rain preventer. Mostly I cause rain by trying to go shopping. It usually starts before I've made it to the first corner (sometimes even on the doorstep despite being clear while I was inside!). So as long as I have no need to go anywhere the weather is more likely to remain fine.

I cause it to become overcast one time three by wearing sunglasses.
I also regularly miss the Grand Prix.
So not much help on either account.

my sympathies to Gothly and family
I make a point of missing every sporting event I can
not sure who I'm helping (nor do I really care )
I do have the knack of making buses and trains arrive but smoking is enough of a waste of money without chucking away just lit cigarettes

"She isn't actually seeing ghosts and being haunted is she?"
No. Wrong side of the family. It was just an unpleasant shock.
"I wonder if any of my software is still in one of the racing cars though."
Wow! You wrote some software for a racing car?
"Taking an umbrella out is quite a good general rain preventer."
Now, there's a thought. I could rig up some kind of washing line umbrella type affair. That should confuse the hell out of the likes of Michael Fish (who, as we all know, can predict the weather because he controls it).
Avernus. Stop wearing sunglasses! Sheesh. Some people.

Gothly says thanks for the sympathies. The funeral's tomorrow.

Hmm. No, I'm really not a fan of sunlight, outside of accepting it's life giving properties.
