Unhealthy Winter
Chrizzie Started conversation Oct 22, 2003
This early morning I was waiting - as usual - for my bus to come. And while I was standing there, completely innocent and half-sleeping, thinking nothing profound and only wishing to get back into the warm - preferably my bed - I couldn't help but listening to a conversation a couple had right beside me. Well, it wasn't really a conversation, rather a three-sentence-dialogue. It went like this:
She: It's so cold. This isn't healthy.
He: It isn't healthy ?
She: Yup.
Something about this struck me as so odd that I couldn't stop repeating these few lines over and over again in my mind. And soon enough I knew what was bothering me so much. And because it perturbed me so much, I almost told this lady how incredibly stupid her comment was. (And believe me, I'm not a regular at accusing random people of stupidity.)
I think what kept me from doing so was the way her husband reacted. He seemed already used to that kind of comment. But that didn't stop me from getting more and more agitated.
It's not the cold that's unhealthy ! There's nothing unhealthy whatsoever about the cold. You just have to dress warm enough. Just like the warmth isn't unhealthy. Not if you're lying in a pool on Ibiza.
It may be unhealthy to jump around stark naked in the middle of January on a frozen lake. But if you get sick then, definitely no one's going to blame the cold. Or the winter for that matter. If you do that you're just daft.
You just can't blame the weather. That's simply not fair. The clouds waited for one whole year gathering themselves to be strong enough to roll over Germany the way they do now and to bring us a refreshing coolness after the hot summer. And all that lady did was accusing them to be unhealthy. You can't do that. That's just... no... you just... you just can't.
But what particularly puzzled me about this whole thing is that it occupied me enough to think about it for the whole of the fifteen minute bus ride, to think some more during my 45 minutes lecture on the French Revolution and to write my first journal entry about it.
I think from now on I'll wear my earmuffs while waiting for the bus.
