Looks empty doensn't it. But it's actually full of stuff. Dust, tachyons, gravity wells, and string, lots and lots of string. Sounds strange, but the universe is like that. One day you're waking down the street minding your own business, the next moment your body has been deconstructed at a molecuar level by a hamster in an ice-cream van.

You should check out the intro to "A Matter of Life and Death" - a wartime film starring David Niven...

It starts off "This is Space - Big, isn't it...?" and goes on from there. I'm sure Douglas Adams was influenced by that intro in the style of some of the original "Guide" entries... smiley - bigeyes

That wasn't the one with Roger Moore and the Greek monastery?

Nope. David Niven is a pilot going down with his plane. The angel sent to take his soul away misses him in the fog, he meets up with a girl and falls in love. There is a trial in "Heaven" to see whether he is allowed to stay with her. Many excellent set pieces, including the escalator to heaven...

Well, if you live in the UK, and read this in time, you can watch (or tape - it's very good!) "A Matter Of Life and Death" on BBC2, Saturday September 25th from 12:40pm to 2:20pm. If you read this in time, I urge you to make the effort!

I just finished watching it again - excellent!

btw, I got the quote wrong - it actually starts with "This is the Universe - Big, isn't it."
