Halloween

Post 1

It was Halloween on Saturday and it occured to me that it is the strangest of celebrations. For the first place very few of us actually know what we're celebrating. It's just some pagan thing isn't it? An excuse to dress in something stupid?

In America it is a fine tradition, a celebration for kids to fill up on sweets and have fun. Here it's more an excuse for kids to egg the house of the bloke down the road who looks a bit paedoish.

As for us adults we've appropriated this celebration in the same way as we appropriate any festival or holiday. It's a good excuse to get drunk.

And however decided to make it all about dressing up was a genius in my opinion. While I threw on the same Leatherface costume as last year that I picked up in Tesco for a tenner, other people went all out. And quite frankly amongst the women of Croydon it appears to be a competition for who can have the costume with the least material. Marvellous.

My only problem is the name. Halloween? What does that mean? Let's just call a spade a spade shall we? Next year I will look forward to celebrating Drunken Slutfest 2010.
