both porter and stout are styles of of beer and not types of bee. The two types of beer are lager and ale. Most british and American craft brews are ales like Pale Ale, IPA, Bitter, Stout, Porter, Reds, Wheats, Browns, and others. This means that the yeast used to ferment them is a top fermenting yeast and is active at higher temperatures (about 75^F). Lagers are usually German and the mass produced pilsners of almost every country around the world. Examples include Budwieser, Coors, Miller, Budvar, Pils Urquell, Cardinal, Sapporro and many others. Lager yeast is bottom fermenting and is active at cooler temperatures (55^f), it also takes about twice as long as ale ytesat to attenuate, or ferment to completion. If anyone has any other questions about beer feel free to ask. I will be submitting an article soon. Cheers Sean
