Is this the future? the franchise is kicking off, with an 8th series comissioned, a spin off ("Stargate: Atlantis") and a possible SG-1 film.
I have to say its an interesting idea. A nice sci fi twist on egyption, norsk, asian, and other early civilizations. The idea that there are pockets of humans used as slaves around the galaxy and the quest to free then has a truely epic feel to it. Stargate plays on ideas from various cultures.
I cant see any sci fi show, still in production that compaires to it now adays, other than maybe the flagging enterprise...

Could it also be seen as a metaphor for the USA's idea that it will lead the rest of the world to 'freedom'? After all Babylon 5 had a lot of parrels with world events, particularly the Balkin conflict during the 90s.
