Interesting read, but the point on data firing the phaser is not quite right. He in fact fired the disruptor that Fajo dropped after vapouring his assistant. When Data beamed back on board and Riker enquired about the firing of the illegal weapon, Data simply stated that "something must have happened during transport"
As Data cannot lie unless ordered to, this is a subject of much debate between fans.
