A couple of the acads have departed, leaving loads of books behind them. It was decided to put all of the books into a room and leavt it open for people to go in and help themselves. A note was put out to this effect on Wednesday. The books were cherry picked, and I am told that as of yesterday the remains have been bagged up to be thrown out.
This is IMHO an act of wanton vandalism. C rescued as many as he could but his own room is now creaking at the seams.
I would love to have had a rummage around, but was in Glesga throughout the ridiculously limited window of opportunity.
Note to self - try to find out when they are down to be uplifted, and to what skip they are to be taken.
If I was in charge, I would have left the room open for a full week following widespread notice before bagging up. I would have asked for student volunteers to sort out the remaining books before the cherry-picking and to write out a rough catalogue, which I would have sent to the other Scottish Law Schools. Every copy of J Henderson Begg's Treatise on Law Agents - an example - destroyed is one less copy on the planet.
I have said in the past that I have no problemn with the composting of valueless books - books of religion, Lenin's minor works in soviet editions, battered paperback Jeffrey Archers - books that on account of general poor condition or ubiquity or which form part of essential de-cluttering where the effort in findining a home from them is genuinely disproportionate; yeah, skip 'em, but the remains of the lifetime collection of at leave one very senior and distinguished Scots legal acad? No, pause awhile surely.
Anyhow, Susan and bussed into town. We did the Rosemount butcher and cheese shop and got some nice-looking veg from a market. We met Caius for lunch. I bought some CDs (Hawkwind, Stephen Malkmus, Wooden Shjips...)
Bacon & pitta for tea. Susan is wathing Torchwood. Miah has been being a pain. Rainy day.

And this is demme appaling. OK, so Eck & his gang dictated, but did we have to be first? Good luck to the law firm that, I read, is embarking upon a legal challenge of the policy.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
