Caius gets doctored this morn.

This is the best time of a bonny Spring day. It is still and calm and bright outside, with distinct sharp-edged shadowe angling in from the East, and rich buttery sunshine. It is cool - that's the clincher; not hot, not icy - cool that requires some physical activity to perfect. A 'stop time' moment.

I am going in to town this eve, to return a cracked Cross pen, then to potter around awhile before meeting Susan at 7 to watch the Torcher at 7.30.

I am glad that things went well yesterday.

Some of the comments anent the big event have been sour, cynical, carping... there is no place for negativism at a wedding; no matter how much one may oppose the institution of the monarchy, there is no need to rain on someone else's parade. I have done it myself, and recognise the impulse in me to do so. I shall attempt to rein it in.

I have long-since run neither hot nor cold anent the monarchy, but, on balance, I find myself in growing sympathy. It is archaic, implausible, a bit ridiculous, but is capable of rising to heights that a President Mandleson/Blair/&c &c never could (Nats up here have in the past mooted Sean Connery, Hume! save us). Apolitical, but wielding political power. Apart from society but emblematic of the nation. Pampered and indolent, but harder-working that anyone around them... but that isn't work... oh yes it is.

Anyhow, I suppose the point is that symbols are important. I wouldn't like to be one. I couldn't bear the weight.

Last Sunday's Indy devoted twelve-plus pages to documenting its lack of interest in the RW. I see from the paper's website that today they're all over it. Cake and eat it.

The Daily Mail is an unpleasant hitsrag. Statement of the obvious.

Right, Caius should by now be, officially, Dr Caius, and lunch should have been enjoyed. The name plate on his office door is lo longer improper, and hids details can be updated on the Law School web pages. Huzzah, huzzan, huzzah, hats off chaps.

Hats off to Dr Caius!

And I agree with you re the wedding stuff, Douglas. I had not been at all interested during the interminable run-up, but since I was going to my sister's for the day yesterday, I decided that the best tactic would be to go with the flow, rather than being grumpy about it. Glad I did - we all had a lovely time, which included champagne and vintage Christmas cake (freshened up with a sprinkling of brandy!).

Mind you that does not mean that I do not harbour a deep resevoir of ill will for the Olympics.
