A Conversation for Japanese Knotweed

Wild Bird Seed

Congrats on an excellent piece. Studies a fair amount of Botany in my time but you managed both some new information and and explanation which was both scientific but would be of interest to the casual reader.

You mentioned about all plants being female therefore reproduction being vegetative. Just recently we have noticed some seedlings which have turned out to be knotweed - the flower gave it away and looks just as you have said. This has arrived through wild bird food we provide on our patio being washed into gravel and germinating. Not sure if this is mentioned on the Defra site but clearly could be another point of entry... be on your guard!

Well done again, look forward to the the powers that be giving this your article the green light!

Hi Topher,

Thanks a lot for your posting! It *is* a bit of a concern to hear that seeds could be coming in from wild-bird seed! smiley - yikes It just re-emphasises how difficult it is to get rid of a plant once it has set up home in a new and unprotected environment.

Best regards,
