Who and Whom Which One
Jhawkesby Posted Oct 2, 2008
I am not trying to trap anybody. I have read my reference book and it only gives a few examples and it explains how to use who and whom which I said in my other replies. I am asking for help from people who do know what they are talking about because I dont understand the difference but I do now. I gave the examples and asked people to fill them in so I can get a stronger opinion from them. I also asked who is who in the first example and how is it the subject of the verb.

Jhawkesby: It's possible that your uncertainty stems from the fact that 'whom' is considered rather stuffy, and its use tends to be restricted to formal writing.
It's important to note, though, that 'whom' must be used when it's the object of a preposition; 'To whom it may concern' [NOT 'To who'].
However, in conversation and in less formal communications, the preposition is usually placed at the end of the clause and 'who' is used:
'With whom did you drink last night?' (formal)
'Who did you drink with last night?' (more natural)
'To whom am I speaking?' (formal)
'Who am I speaking to?' (more natural)
A decent grammar book should explain all this. I can recommend an Oxford University Press publication; 'A Practical English Grammar' by A.J. Thomson & A.V. Martinet.

Jkesby: consider this:
1-Who did you invite?
2-Who wrote that book?
In 1, who is the object, in 2, who is the subject.

Just as well you used that smiley, Mar, because I'm very much the amateur. It's amazing what one picks up teaching non-native speakers.
Another Oxford publication I like to recommend: 'Practical English Usage' by Michael Swan. It's a great read and much more fun than a grammar book.

Use "whom" in the same places that you'd use "him" and "them".
Use "who" in the same places you'd use "he" and "they".
Easy peasy!
