how to use headphones properly!

you know theres a long wire with a headphone and a short wire with headphone? I always used to just wear them in front of my neck, thinking that it was a stupid thing to do making one long and one short. but on the bus this morn i saw someone using them and she had the long wire going round the back of her neck

so am gonna test it on the way home

But all my headphones have equal length wire I've two pairs of 'in the ears' type headphones, one is sony I think the other the company I never remember teh name of and a pair of expensive studeo style headphones what are you ment to do with them? I could never figure it out.... actually, as you are good with video recorders, you couldn't explain how I' switch this computer thing off?
