I asked for some help on the Great North Road. Some of you must come from up that way, surely. I was driving up from Kent to Robin Hood's Bay. I asked you for somewhere to stay on the way. No-one got back to me. Never mind, I did it all in one go anyway.
Thanks everyone

Sue. I can't think of anyone here who comes from further north than Merseyside. The odd Scot maybe. I've travelled to Whitby from Stoke the quick way and taken a tent. No need to break journey and while there I used a campsite. So I'd be useless except for what either of us could find on the net. Some, though not all, of us boarders are kinda stay-at-home characters too.
Thanks everyone

Sorry Sue, I missed your post, however there is a very nice fish restaurant with a view of the Bay. Guess its too late now. Can't remember the name right now anyway.
Thanks everyone

Hi Sue, I hope you enjoyed the trip and Robin Hood's Bay. Did you see the ghost of Heathcliff? Or maybe you danced in one of the fairy rings you find on the moors inland from RHB?
I hope your stay was nicer than my last one - the proprietress of a cafe-restaurant (down where the road ends near the sea) told my group we should go back where we came from in somewhat racist terms. I reported her to the local authorities but don't think they took action. I hope it's not the same place August Darnell recommends. Everyone else was very friendly.
I didn't see your initial post asking for help. There are lots of reasonably-priced B&B just outside York, though I suppose that's closer your destination than you meant.
I might have also suggested you turn north-eastwards earlier than Leeds, around Worksop, so then gone over the technically, if not aesthetically, impressive Humber Bridge, and up to the village of gate before turning towards Scarborough. That way you see some of the pleasant Yorkshire Wolds.
If you ever head further North (or go a long way round), I have a close friend who runs a nice B&B in a detached house with a big garden on the outskirts of Durham.
Thanks everyone

3pickled walnuts. What a terrible time you had. I read your entry. What cafe (sorry about missing accent) were you in? My friends live in Mount Pleasant North. Just down the road from their house you are not allowed to take cars unless you are delivering fish or other things to the very few shops in the village. The whole of the old village is on a very steep incline down to the sea. Not a place to retire to if you have arthritis or can't shake a leg with the best of them.
Thanks everyone

Hi Sue,
don’t know I’d call it ‘a terrible time’, but it was a surprise. And now just something funny to look back on. We never actually went in the café; it was closed. Called the something Bistro.
I seem to remember there were 3 legitimate parkplaces down in the village, one of which I was in until the lorry driver asked if I could do him a favour.
No, I wouldn’t chose to retire there. Down in the village felt too enclosed, and the place is too small and cut off for me
- though, I can shake a leg with the best of them (and often do ).
Okay, you missed an accent: it may have been an acute shortage but at least it wasn't a grave omission.
Thanks everyone

Sue, concerning 'café'. Hold down the 'Alt' key to the right of the spacebar while pressing the 'e' and voilá!

Hi, Doc. I don't know what you can possibly mean ! I have been using Alt-e to call up the Edit menu. That's how it works in my version of Windows 95.
Thanks everyone
AliQuest Posted Aug 21, 2003
I tried Alt Gr as well, JR, but it gives the Edit menu just the same.
Thanks everyone
toxxin - ¡umop apisdn w,I 'aw dlaH Posted Aug 21, 2003
Yo, AQ. JR is correct. There are usually two Alt keys. The one on the right used to be coloured grey, hence AltGr. Use that one as I said originally.
Thanks everyone

Well, I'm baffled then, AQ. In text input mode, it always works for me. I'm using 98SE and IE6. JR uses XP and I think it works for him too.
Thanks everyone

But, of course, Sue can now copy and paste the é character from any of various posts now.
Thanks everyone

I've lost the Euro character that someone kindly sent some months ago.
Thanks everyone
AliQuest Posted Aug 21, 2003
Thanks, JR, but that just shows up as a rectangle on my browser.
The reason why I had lost it is that on a .txt file, it just shows up as a question mark. It keeps OK in a .doc file, which I have now found. However, on pasting here, it changes to € which doesn't help.
