The Great North Road

I'm off on my travels with my son on Tuesday to see a friend who lives near Whitby (Robin Hood's Bay). I'm travelling from Kent and have found what I think is my kind of route which I got from the AA. After the M11 most of it is up the Great North Road (A1/A1M) until I get to inbetween Leeds and York where I go onto the A64, etc. etc. I don't get out much (even though I have a new Fiesta) and don't think I want to do the whole journey in one hit (apparently, 5 hours and 16 minutes - how can the AA be so exact? 16 minutes?!) Can anyone tell me a good place to stay for the night to break up the journey?
