There is only one thing worse than being Gosho, and that is not being Gosho

Fascinating smiley - smiley

One part which I think will need some rewriting - "to better withstand the adverse weather conditions of the Old West."
Although John Stetson was making his hats at the time of the 'Old West', the way that sentence is written suggests that the weather isn't the same any more, but living in Texas, I can tell you that it certainly is. You could replace 'the old west' with 'southern and southwestern US states'.

I've adjusted the entry to reflect your concerns -- I changed the entry to "territories" rather than states because I'm not up on my
American history and I'm not quite sure if (besides Texas and California) the territories became states before or after the Civil War.

That's better, but I guess we could erase all doubt (and any need for history lessons) by just calling it 'the American west and southwest' smiley - smiley

most people don't think of the cowboy hat as a stetson. The labled 'stetson' is more commonly the hats worn, as you said, by state troopers and the national park service

I'm not saying they do; however, if you read the article carefully you'll see that's not what it says. When people hear "Stetson," they think "cowboy hat," not the other way around.

Do you know if the term 'ten gallon hat' has anything to do with Stetsons?

I'm fully aware thats not what the article says. I'm disagreeing with what it says. Cowboy hat makes people think of cowboy hats much more than stetson does. The dictionary definition of 'Stetson' merely states that a 'felt hat with a wide brim and high crown'

I suspect that has more to do with local folklore than actual marketing PR by Stetson.

I would mention the white Stetsons which are worn in the spring/summer are made of straw (?) and the black felt ones are usually worn in the Autumn/Winter months.

When i bought my two in Austin I was told never to wear the White Stetson after Labor Day - it just simply wasn't done smiley - smiley

Can I make a suggestion that debate on this entry os kept in PR - that way we and the Scouts can see if it is ready!
