h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

Some stares may stay within us etched on our retinas retained stains,
Black marks, marking time till in recall we understand there uses,
Calf eyes or screwed up faces, puzzlement ,contentment ,atonement ,
And those meant only for our lovers , or mothers pride ,fathers anger,
Strangers faces sometimes look like they know us or what we are thinking,
When we blink what are we seeing or are we hiding from our sight,

As we recoil in terror or burst out laughing at some unguarded passing,
Thought we captured ,rapture. seen in the corner of our eyes ,before the
Shutter came down ,or we think ,the wind will change ,
As we start to say goodbye a hand Is raised ,so we re arranged our hair,
Or touch or scratch our face ,some thing to distract ,or change a point of view,
For we are far less sure now, of just what we can do ,then when all is quite,
We may or not may find that we have been drifting ,lost within our minds,

But it is far more likely to all that are around ,that we where talking ,
But not listening to sounds about which we thought we heard in answers back,of absent minds
So as not to cause alarm ,we sought to show no sign that we are far distent
A face all blank presented ,looking vacantly into space , that place just out of reach
