Loads of people, place certain types of music into the category of Rock Music, thats why I asked!

I just can't resist the opportunity to be sarcastic, sorry 'bout that. I've always defined rock 'n roll with the backbeat and the guitar rythems. That's why so much of the guitar driven music I like can't really be defined as rock 'n roll, even though that's what people try to say. I understand the sentiment.
