At the moment, I'm just using my discussions list from POV to see any movement on here. I suppose I could check by going to my space on here, then looking at my conversations.

Yes, I'm doing exactly the same thing. Does this mean that only you and I can see this conversation, rather than the entire messageboard being able to read this? Or can all the other members of h2g2 see it, but not POV?

Dunno, I don't know if it's like a PM, or if it's accessible as a conversation to others.
I think it might be private, as it's not on a subject on the site. There's a whole load of subjects.
I'm going to poke around, and go to My Space (on the left), and see if the conversations are listed. I've made you both friends, as that might make some difference.

Just found out from someone. These will show up on your discussions in POV, others can look at them if they click on your discussions. So it's not really like PM'ing.

Again, nothing on here is private so pm s best done at gavins, for those who are still there

I think we're supposed to go on the various subjects and chat. Religion, science, whatever, this is just another way of starting a conversation, and anyone can join in.
