Poor Spelling, it's not just students

I read this article: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-14130854

And I was appalled by the narrow view it gives. Half the article says "Students can't spell" and the other half says "Bad spelling loses us money" which gives the impression that employing students in the internet industry will lose you money. Codswallop.

I work in that industry and can tell you right now as fact that the text that comes through for pages on websites comes from the clients *full* of spelling and grammar mistakes. Sometimes it is near illegible, even with the use of spell checkers. And you can't change these because clients will then complain that you've been messing about with their text, and you then get the blame for every single mistake that they've made.

The problem of bad spelling and grammar on websites does exist, but it's not the fault of newly graduated students. It's the fault of industry cutting corners and costs and not employing proof readers. You wouldn't publish a book or even a brochure without having it proof read first, treat your website the same way. And stop pointing the finger of blame where it doesn't solely lie.

Oh, and the website he gives as an example of how it can be improved... 21 errors in the code validation. Pot & Kettle methinks.
