So, I've been a busy little coding bee. Last week in the Post editorial, Shazz mentioned about a chess tournament that was being held over the internet. And I thought that the forum structure of h2g2 would be a good place for ourselves to play chess. Others agreed, and so I sat down to think about how it would work.
What we now have is a programme written in JavaScript that puts a chess board and pieces up on a h2g2 page and allows researchers to play against other researchers.
It still needs some work doing to it, but it is working

Yep, that was me I make no bones about it
It's coming together now, just a few more bugs to iron out and it'll all be up and running, as soon as I get rid of this bleeding flu that I seem to have aquired
I'm not a great chess player, but I do like to play. Hopefully after a little while we'll be able to sort the players according to their level of ability and therefore match people to an ideal opponent

Sorry to hear you have flu At this point I'd try to recommend a remedy, but I can't think of any.

I guess there'll be an H2G2 chess league, and everything. Sounds cool Have you coded in the rules for moving pieces?

No, I'm leaving it just as a chess board. I will be doing a page listing the rules of chess, as well as a set of 'House Rules'
Coding in all the rules would just be too big a job seeing as I'm doing it in JavaScript and for nothing
But a chess league, I hope s

Ugh... in Javascript... not that I know anything about programming Javascript, of course... but it still sounds hard...

Well, it's just about finished now
All I've got left to do is frill it up a bit and take my comments and alerts out off the code so it runs a bit smoother.
Oh, and then set up an instructions and rules page
