fathom have you tried splitting your bt line where it comes into the house
put computer on first connection, along with wi fi,modem network
ogemaflig , then put phone tv on other one.
i have all that to come when i get base station back as use lap top most of the time , which currently using , but bit inconvinent for printers
camera ect.must get on

Sorry, logicus, I didn't notice this post in all the excitement.

I've got three extensions on my BT line: the sky box, the phone and the computer. The main phone socket is not being used directly. I have a filter on each socket which is supposed to separate the low frequency phone signal from the high frequency ADSL signal.

A 'man' from BT is supposed to be coming in the next day or so to check our connection. The problem is that the ADSL signal is there sometimes but not all the time and the modem only seems to look for a signal when it first switches on. Consequently switching it on and off a few times will result in a connection. The only way to switch the modem off is to unplug the USB lead. This, as you can imagine, is tedious and should be completely unnecessary. I have to put the USB lead in one of the front sockets where the cable is in the way in order to avoid reaching round the back of the computer and this cruel and unusual punishment will eventually lead to failure of the socket or plug. If we are stuck with the situation I will need to find a switchable USB link. I have a powered USB hub so perhaps I could interrupt its power supply with a switch and plug the modem into that. My wife doesn't have the patience to do this though and, reasonably I think, expects the thing to work first time.

it may be phone is set for pulse in computer and computer looks for tone.
i used to get that from haveing bt phone with email/fax cabibilitys
that auto disconect after checking no messages, when i put that on different socket no prob other wise every time call came in isp disconected.
surely if you interupet the power supply to the modem would disconnect.

The problem doesn't seem to be associated with the phone, which in any case is set to 'tone'.

The modem is powered through the USB cable so doesn't have a separate power supply. The only way to switch it off - and force it to recheck the signal when is switches on again - is to disconnect the USB plug.
