The car, or automobile is one of the enduring ideas of the twentieth century, bringing freedom to travel, yet conversley preventing travel due to fuel and running costs. It's development followed many hundreds of years, when, after feeding petrol his horse, the Prsident of the Ford motor Company, decided that there was no point owning a company which didn't produce anything, and set about thinking what sort of motor he could make. Plans were scant and rather chaotic at first, but one thing was agreed. Anyone with enough money to own one of these would have to have one. They were to become the greatest status symbol mankind had ever known. With the possible exception of silicon implants.
