A Conversation for Talking Point: Ethical Consumerism

It's all about choice...

While I am all for ethical consumerism, people must not be made to feel awful because the don't shop 'fairly'.

The great and the good are always telling us what we should eat, where we should buy, and what is best for us, but fail to realise what we can actually do within our means.

Ethical Consumerism is expensive and while I understand and appreciate the noble reasoning behind each and every one of the principles involved, I'd like to see those who espouse fair trade show a little understanding to those who are financially limited in choice.

Instead of telling people what they should do - acknowledge what they are doing.

chickadee (wheee!)

yeah ... kinda. the thing is, producing things in an environmentally friendly way is cheaper on a long-term basis. the way we're using resources right now, we'll need to do a huge amount of reinvention in only a few years, because we'll run out of fossil fuels, or some new, not so bad virus will wipe out entire crops because they're all clone of each other (bananas are farmed that way) or we'll be overrun by superweeds because teh gene for pesticide resistance was ccidentally passed form our engineered crops into the wild. you can see where i lean on this. one of the reeeally harmful practices is the feedlots for meat, so i make a difference by being vegetarian and not supporting those. and labelling GMOs would make quite a difference for a lot of people herein the u.s.

Coel.

I wholeheartedly agree. It is unethical to tell a starving family not to eat cheap foods, even if they are ruining the environment. I am all for conservatism and natural foods, but even soylent green is better than nothing.
