Just lately I've been existing on very little sleep (due to kids and family life in general). The question is how little sleep can you have and still get through the day without falling apart? I long for the days of a solid uninterrupted 8 hours - bliss!

I think the average person can go for about 2 days without sleep...
Although it's not advised...

Yes you can get a narcosis from it. But if you are getting kick or something out of it at the time you can go extraordinary long spells without. If it is a disorder though, a radical change might be required.
If it is a temporary problem sick kids or something, you know it will come around. A nice walk in the evening, a couple of beers and you will nod off in front of the box.
Eating too much and especially in the evening if your digestion is a bit wonky, will stop you sleeping soundly.

Thanks for the advice. I'm pretty sure that this is just temporary. Hopefully kids will get into a decent routine of sleeping through. I'm getting used to not getting more than 4 hours a night but I don't want to do it for ever. Wasn't it Margaret Thatcher who said she only ever had about 4 hours sleep, don't want to end up like that. The irony is that when they are teenagers I'll spend more time trying to get them out of bed. I'm off to try the few beers thing (not on the kids tempting though it might seem)
